Food for the Soul, a food rescue ministry of the Community of the Transfiguration, was recently awarded a generous grant that will enable the organization to purchase new distribution vehicles, furthering its efforts to combat food waste and hunger in our community.
The grantor, Hamilton County R3Source, is the county’s solid waste district whose mission is to reduce reliance on landfills through waste reduction, reuse, and recycling programs. Offered in 2022, the Impact Grant is aimed at funding programs that significantly reduced landfill waste in Hamilton County, Ohio.
"We are thrilled to have received this grant and for our partnership with Hamilton County R3Source" said Mary Knight, Director of Food for the Soul. "With the new fleet vehicles, we will be able to continue our mission of rescuing food and feeding people while reducing food waste and promoting sustainability."
Food for the Soul is a program born out of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Since then, the organization has rescued and distributed over 245 thousand pounds of food to date, providing nearly 100 thousand meals to individuals and families. Thanks to the grant, Food for the Soul will be able to transport larger quantities of food to more locations, diverting even more food away from landfill and serving a greater number of individuals and families in need.
“The grant is a testament to the incredible work that Food for the Soul has done, and will continue to do, in our community,” said Tony Staubach, Food Waste Diversion Coordinator at Hamilton County R3Source. “We are excited to see the impact that the new fleet of vehicles will have on the organization's ability to divert even more food waste and repurpose it for those in need.”
